This Obscene Baby Auction presents
BRONZE
SUH KEI DA
COWTOWN

Some full on Belgian mid week action tonight. Bronze come on a ferry from Hechtel, which if you don't know,is the epicentre for excellence and good naturedness in all of the good god world. Bronze's music reflects this by being sweetly melodious and catchy yet soothing and proper-rocking all at once. Sometimes they use two basses sometimes just bass, drums and guitars. Intricateness leads to Chicago-er comparisons like Don Cab or Dianogah and epic tunes make GodspeedYou Black Emperor and Mogwai remindings. They are well good.

Suh Kei Da have a name difficult to remember how to spell. Maybe their music will reflect that? They are also from Belgium and apparantly rock very hard in the post-genre. No doubt utterly super and enthrawling.Lets fucking go.

Cowtown are from Leeds and play mangled pop. It's complex but always catchy and they change it all the time. Why? It does get better. No vocals most of the time, great riffs and 'hooooks' all the time. They jump around on pigeon-holes like surf, deerhoof, devo, etc. No one doesn't like it. Especially those with a couple of ears and humour sense.

Gig will start at 8pm so why not go fill up on nice food and drink at Coconut Cafe on Welton Rd in HydePark beforehand. If you are Vegan you will pass out at the range of things to chomp. If you like meat there is good meat. Open from 4.. see elsewhere in this here book here for details.

Cops and robbers present:

Best Fwends
Printed Circuit
Jean Genet

A night of the electronic persuasion that promises a high level of entertainment coupled with the opportunity to dance. It features:Best fwends, whose anti-pop music has been described as “a mess of nasty cheap casio styled beats, old school synths, and distorted vocals made by two musical idiot savants from Texas”. Like all the best US acts these days they have a penchant for performing in their underpants with taped up faces and for eschewing the stage which naturally adds to the spectacle.

You can also see the homespun “Gloriously bright and breezy electro-pop” of printed circuit who, now operating as a duo, are still stupefying their friends with tales of their recent ‘world tour’.

Scantily clad neon queer girl/boy duo, Jean Genet are keyboard lovin disco dancin lo-fi hos, playing a shoddy brand of punk electro. Some think they're filth, in reality they're just sexually frustrated.

Hi there. Boy, sure is alot of free space in this months cops and robbers....yep. Leaves plenty of space to explain what going on with this years chinchillafest. As you may or may not know chinchillafest has now been condensed from a practical three day festival to an unmanageble, daft two day festival. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control the common place has had to unexpectedly cancel all bookings for the next couple of weeks...... this means that the first day of chinchilla festival has no venue and thus, will not be going ahead. Chinchilla gigs taking place at the Brudenell social club on the 9th and 10th will go ahead as planned but we’ve had to monkey around with the bill a little to compensate for the loss of a day. Details can be found on the next few pages.......yep, the next few pages!!....................... we’ve plenty of space alright.

Chinchillafest III.. a real civilised festival.

Weekend ticket will now cost 10.
weekenders will still receive a free comic and cd with a bunch of bands who are playing the festival Day tickets. saturday 9th of july, £7. sunday 10th of july, £6.

Membership: The ticket price does not include membership for the brudenell social club. If you are not already a member it will cost you an additional £1.20.

The brudenell social club is a vital space in the heart of LS6, under threat from closure due to sound complaints. Unless money is raised to sound proof the venue future events at the venue will cease - to find out more visit www.brudenellsocialclub.co.uk

Tuesday 19th of July

Run of the mill records present:

at the bridge inn, kirkstall

Due to circumstances beyond my control I can't tell you the price or start time for this gig but I am sure it will be cheap and start at a reasonable hour.

A chance to catch the krautrock stylings of Leeds's neu-est trio Quack Quack and the throwaway postfunk mess of Brown Owl in the fresh surroundings of what could be described as a 'real pub'. This probably means they will never do anything as stupid as allow a rock gig there again so come down and watch the regulars leave and the owners twitch. The bridge inn is located here: heading out of town on the A65 [kirkstall rd.] you turn left at Kirkstall lights/morrisons and The Bridge Inn is down that road on the right.

Brown Owl
Radio Burroughs
Sailors tbc
More tbc.
The fenton, 8pm, £4waged/£3 conc.

Brown Owl reappear in your lives to continue their devotion to a baffling post-funk-math-rock sound all of their own.

Radio Burroughs hail from berlin, they make noisy, angry rock-maybe emo type stuff. It’s kind of clever but with a straight forward pissed off edge.

Sailors are new kids on the block, refreshing audiences around leeds with their groovy, messed-up post-hardcore punk ways. People say moss icon-esque, I say yes, but with a healthy dose of red monkey too.

Tasty Fanzine Present.... Marissa Nadler + Lionshare + David Thomas Broughton + North Cross

Marissa Nadler: On stage, clad in black shawls and cascading tresses, Marissa Nadler performs with an intricate finger-style on the guitar, ukele, and 5-string banjo. Yet it is often her voice that is a shuttle towards another time, a soprano reverberating with melancholy and longing. From her earliest incarnations, Marissa appeared with music that was unique and gorgeous skillfully and simply hinting at the songs of the sea, the haunting chansons of maidens, the cowboy ditties of ranchers, and the funerary processions of mourners. www.marissanadler.com

Lionshare: 'With all the stately dolorousness of early Leonard Cohen, they combine guitar, cello, and melancholy with strong, quiet hands. Its beautiful, mood-swung, post-psych folk'. - The Wire www.lionshare.org.uk

David Thomas Broughton: 'British entrant into the New Weird Americana movement brings some freeform Animal Collective folk sounds to Leeds.' americana UK 'Remarkable, like a timeless classic or an obscure LP you discovered in a dusty second hand shop.' angryape.com www.birdwar.com

North Cross: Hailing from the wilds of Manchester, North Cross will be gracing the good people of Leeds with their presence, making a rare trip over the Pennines to play their own brand of hushed folk/country melodies and soundscapes. Truly beautiful stuff. More info at www.tastyfanzine.org.uk and reviewer guest list requests to gigs@tastyfanzine.org.uk.

BULLET UNION have just released an album, sound like SONIC YOUTH in Geffen times and shout and bang off!

EAGLE EYE is an emerging group of cretins who boogie to synth controlled guitar strains whilst singing like crap children. They think that they sound at times like BILGE PUMP, though the members of Pump deny such filth.

TERA TORA is a brand new, shiny, clean band making their debut in Leeds. Containing members of THE MURDER OF… they smell like EX MODELS.

Hopefully SAILORS can play but I’ve not asked them. Great.

Damo Suzuki's Network is an assembly of musicians. It's a collective meeting
place where like minded people go The goal is simple, for musicians to
communicate with each other and with the audience. There are no ego's involved.
Musicians send smoke signals to each other. They respond in kind. Damo selects
musicians who have the potential to communicate freely and who are able to
respond honestly to each other in the here and now. This also involves a respect
for and dynamic communication with the audience. Both Damo and Can refer to this
process as Instant Composing. Each concert is a unique event. There are never
any rehearsals. Mistakes are moments of opportunity. For the musician, this
process is in equal parts exciting and terrifying

Saturday 14th May,
Holy Trinity Church, Boar Lane,
£4/£3, 8.30

Bring your own booze - Cheap! STRICTLY no glass
bottles.

Pinkie Maclure and John Wills

Pinkie and John are a duo, whose latest album, Cat's Cradle, is a cocktail of dark folk, gothic blues,
rhymes and chants made by concertina, dulcimer, bodhran, melodeon, whispers, lyre, loops, guitar and
voices. Once the drummer in Loop, Wills was also a multi-instrumentalist in The Hair And Skin Trading
Company, while Maclure is no stranger to torch songs and avant cabaret styles. But the bluesy grounding of
her extraordinary voice keeps it free from histrionics, sliding effortlessly from a sensual
throatiness up to its higher register. I can't recommend them highly enough - they are fantastic, and
blew my socks off when I saw them last year.

Rosie Lewis

Rosie is from Gateshead, and has been quietly churning out amazing music for years. Her work has been
released by Kill Rock Stars, Slampt and Subjugation, and her versatility is reflected by that wide range of
labels. Her current solo work has evolved from Ani DiFranco style singer songwriting into a layered
improvisational style; using just her voice, her guitar and two sampler pedals, she makes massive
architectural pieces that are mesmerising and deeply moving. In the surroundings of the church, she should
be stunning.

McWatt

McWatt are a leeds based duo who swap between playing flute, double bass, accordion and concertina. They
play a very minimal classical sounding music with occasional brushes of folk-ness, but presented very
much in keeping with who they are - two punk rockers. It don't sound punk at all, but the music has a
directness and an energy that comes from that background. Sarah also plays in Like a Kind of
Matador, and has worked with Hood and Canvas in the past, and Seth used to play in bands like Snailracing,
Headache and Wooden Spoon.

Sarah Lawton: Another two piece combining evocative acoustic guitar with tablas and mesmerising vocals to
die for.

Biscuithead and the Biscuit Badgers: carrying on the two piece theme, these are led by Mr Dino Casino,
featuring both electric and classical guitars. Each song tells a story, but not necessarily that serious.

This is to raise money for people coming over from Poland involved in the Free Fresco Academy. These were
involved in the mural taking up one of the walls in Oblong Resource Centre, in Burley. Last year Oblong
helped to co-ordinate an exchange project over in Poland to help design and make a mural with the Free
Fresco Academy, at a project near Gdansk.

Wally Shoup & Paul Hession

An associate of Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore, American saxophonist Shoup operates in "the liminal space between jazz,
improvisation and freeform blurt". His playing is thrillingly raucous, "combining an exacting attention to atonal timbral detail
with a singing, vocalised style and the kind of hyped energy levels of musicians like Pharaoh Sanders and Albert Ayler" (David Keenan).
His partner on this occasion is Leeds' own powerhouse drummer, Paul Hession.

Elephant Micah

Elephant Micah hails from New York. His songs demonstrate a crushing Beauty not usually present in the material of one so young. Come witness and
behold a minstrel of epic intensity! 'soft and spacious songs serve as a fitting
reminder that there's beauty to be found in even the most vast cornfields' (www.fakejazz.com)

David Thomas Broughton

'British entrant into the New Weird Americana movement brings some freeform Animal Collective folk sounds to Leeds.' americana UK 'Remarkable, like

McWatt

One of the finest duos since that chap and the duck Mcwatt travel their own
musical course and for the sake of airline security they packed their own bags
too. Some of the finest off-kilter folk influenced meadlings you'll hear
anywhere. 'McWatt plough a more experimental furrow, but one which is no less
pleasing to the ear. Use of double bass, flute and occasional accordian set this

Joseph's Well

£6 - 7.30pm doors.

Hike Club presents:

HOT SNAKES
So impressed with the UK from their recent tour in
Oct, the snakes are hitting our shores again. For
those who don't know Hot Snakes are a total powerhouse
of everything that is good about post-punk rock music
today. With original members of DRIVE LIKE JEHU and
ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, and not a million miles from
either band, they will rock your pants.

DAN SARTAIN
Dan is a label mate of the Snakes (SWAMI). From
Birmingham, Alabama, he plays guitar, keyboard, sings
and does the whole lot himself. Has been described as
Straight-up, punky garage rock in the style of the
REAL KIDS, the LYRES, or the ORIGINAL SINS.

BUZZKILL
Blasting out the brass infused rock'n'roll which they
have become renowned for. Leeds' very own Buzzkill
will be taking the stage this evening. They'll
probably all be shitting their pants about playing
onstage with SPEEDO. I encourage heckles to make them
blush.

THE OUBLIETTE
Coming out of retirement for a one off show. The
Oubliette is Penny Brazzo who tonight will be
accompanied by some friends. If you haven't seen /
heard Penny before be prepared to expect a show of
sometimes melancholy, sometimes upbeat, stripped down
rock music with totally amazing vocals.

Ashtray Navigations

Ashtray Navigations will not be stopping at any time soon. Goodnight fuck you. Hope you sleep easy."

Rameses III

Warm drone, from London, gracing Leeds for the very first time. Eclipse says: "The UK's Rameses III hail from a place where subtle drifts are priceless. These insular drones are highlighted by rich acoustic depths, adding so much contrast that it's heartbreaking. Recordings of birds add a natural grace, and in the context, this trio is freed. Within these digital walls rises something majestic, extracted from the soil."

Swedish-born Paris-based Herman Dune view the world with a delicate cynicism. The haunting yet beautiful, low-budget backing to their anti-folk stream of consciousness is joyfully hypnotic, tugging at heart-strings with all the whimsy they can muster. (Timeout magazine),

Diane Cluck's music reverberates with the same unearthly sensual ache of mid-period Tim Buckley. Described as lo-fi minimalist soul music, live her voice is accompanied either by sole acoustic guitar or accordion or piano, occasionally augmented by spooked vocal harmonies like the paeans of haunted angels.

lead vocalist from Can playing with Improvisational & Spontanious Network Musicians.

Damo Suzuki's Network is an assembly of musicians. It's a collective meeting place where like minded people go The goal is simple, for musicians to communicate with each other and with the audience. There are no ego's involved. Musicians send smoke signals to each other. They respond in kind. Damo selects musicians who have the potential to communicate freely and who are able to respond honestly to each other in the here and now. This also involves a respect for and dynamic communication with the audience. Both Damo and Can refer to this process as Instant Composing. Each concert is a unique event. There are never any rehearsals. Mistakes are moments of opportunity. For the musician, this process is in equal parts exciting and terrifying
