Cops and Robbers March 05 Listings

Hello and sorry this is so late – I’ve had major IT problems in the last couple of weeks. Apologies to anyone who put on a gig that slipped through the early-March net, especially The Coachwhips. Could’ve done with a few more people at that one.

Anyway please do come to the Brudenell tomorrow.

Monday 7th March

Brudenell Social Club

8pm-donations

Brudenell Benefit Night

STOP PRESS – this night will feature 20ish bands, playing 2 or 3 songs each in a ‘Come On Down, the Price Is Right’ kinda way, I think. Please do come on down, the price IS right.

Bands playing include: The Exteriors

Ms Soujourn
The Seven Inches
Ian 7" solo
Frances Rodgers
Cowtown
Bilge Pump (tbc)
Farming Incident
Horton Parks
Spitfire Charlie
Wrong Numbers
Rodgers Band (Engine Room)
The Gold Fever
Jay + Dan
Seven Hours
Random
Jon Wayne Gacy
The Muncie Girls
Samsa
Paul from Wrath/The Scaramanga Six/Being 747
Andie Mills
Adam Miller
The Dwight Schultz
James Mooney

This is why its happening:

The Brudenell is currently experiencing problems with noise complaints, which -if complaints continue - could affect the Venue's music license, and could lead to the Club's closure, causing a devastating affect on both the local community and our gigs.. A collective has formed (see cops and robbers message board) of people who want to help the plight of the club, with the aim of ensuring the clubs long term ability to stage live bands/djs and more.

One of the main areas of which sound is escaping from in the club is the fire doors next to the stage, which we are hoping to replace. This is likely to cost hundreds/thousands of £££sss so we really need to do some serious fundraising.

We also need to ensure that gigs finish by 11pm as stated by the City Council, as the Brudenell really can't afford any more complaints.

The Venue is also keen to recruit new members-it is after all a members club-joining is dirt cheap and a good way of showing your support to the venue; you can join anytime, including the gig on the 7th.

We're not sure what happening entertainment wise at this night as of yet, please see C n R message Board-but please do come along and support the cause, and the Collective if you wish.

Gojonnygogogogo & Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation present:

Chuck (http://www.theespc.com)

Sheffield's Chuck play garage/punk Americana. A recent review went as follows 'Donned in regulation black collar shirts and dark rimmed glasses these good ole boys not only sound the part but look the part too. Riding of the wave of success of their debut single on our own Sheffield Phonographic

Corporation there's a swagger in their step. Chuck main-man, the Buddy Holly-esque Darren personifies the Chuck manifesto – enthusiastically gurning his way through the set. And while there's little in the way of deviation from their musical blueprint, there's no filler nor fat either, just nine garage-epics that hit the spot'

CHAMPION KICKBOXER Tuneful and noisy, and really rather good. All the way from Sheffield

SMOKERS DIE YOUNGER

One review said 'Their sound is easily categorised as lo-fi; Pavement being obvious influences along with a smidgen of the noir of Nick Cave' another said' Smokers Die Younger, from Sheffield, are very difficult to

describe, incorporating elements of everything that's been good about pop music for the last thirty years and more. Tuneful and noisy, often at the same time, but completely un-formulaic: no lame careerist indie-rock tedious tedious heard-it-all-before shite here. True to the spirit of punk rock in that it doesn't give a shit about genre. Three vocalists (two boys and one girl) do battle with guitar, bass, drums and Casio keyboard. The drummer is Chris Trout, formerly known for guitar work with Coping Saw, Bear, Lazer Boy and Spoonfed Hybrid, amongst others, which should give you a hint of what to expect, i.e. the unexpected'

tarandfeathers presents:

Boris
Like a Kind of Matador
Birds of Delay

Boris, from Tokyo, have been producing high quality rock music for 12 years. Shifting styles from record to record, they have developed from Melvins/Earth-esque drone/sludge through trance inducing rhythmic workouts a la Boredoms, free improvisation with psych guitar hero Keiji Haino, noisy collaborations with Merzbow and Masonna, straight ahead 70s hard rock, fluttering, mellow post rock like Ariel M, and epic, desolate and yearning psych that equally recalls prime post-Barrett Pink Floyd, Popul Vuh, and occasionally Metallica. All the while they've maintained a unique identity, possibly even as a direct result of their refusal to be pigeon-holed. They've played in Leeds once before, in 2003, if you were there, you'll remember it, if not, make sure you don't miss out this time!

You probably know what to expect from Like a Kind of Matador by now. Delicate flute and keyboard meanderings interrupted by belligerent guitar and drums. Sorrowful melodies, played LOUD. Their first album will be out on tUMULt records from San Francisco later this year.

Birds of Delay will once again be messing with your perception of time and space with their considered and dynamic psych-noise improvisations. The twist this time is that they'll be playing both before LAKOM and then again, bridging the gap between LAKOM and Boris. Expect the music to start around 8.30, and not to finish until 11!

New album out Now on Fortuna Pop!

MILKY WIMPSHAKE are totally ace and make you dance like a mentalist, one of my all time favourite bands, and one of Keri Morgan’s too! Made up as follows: Peter sings, in an somewhat twee cadence. He also strums the guitar. He likes the cinema and thinks taking a lot of money from teenagers is wrong. He's also in some other bands including Red Monkey. Christine plays bass and sings in the background sometimes.Grant plays the drums. He replaced Ms. Joey Ramone (for real!) who was a very very big Ramones fan. Apparently he has many admirers.

PLOUF! Are like totally great and feature Neil Shumsky founder of www.theshumskyfunclub.co.uk They sing short and silly songs about anything from dinosaurs, to beer, to sex to hello kitty, they are great fun and can accurately be described as 'pure musical nonsense'.

PIFCO - Raino can you find anything to write about them? as I cant think what to write and there wasn't any info on t'internet- If not just leave this sentence in, I’m sure it would make for a good talking point between bands. They are great anyway else they wouldn't be playing.

THE HENTCHMEN

THE HIGH PLANE DRIFTERS

BENJAMIN WETHERILL

Following in the recent wave of contemporary underground Detroit legends to

grace the U.K with their presence (THE SOLEDAD BROTHERS, WHIRLWIND HEAT, BRENDAN BENSON) another of Michigan’s finest THE HENTCHMEN will be touring throughout March.

Formed in 1992 the band boast six albums to date not to mention a wealth of

back catalogue singles one of which “Some Other Guy / Psycho Daisies” has

none other than a young JACK WHITE featured on bass guitar. If that doesn’t

elevate your status than the very fact you are friends, neighbours and gig

partners to the likes of THE DIRTBOMBS, THE DETROIT COBRAS, THE WHITE

STRIPES and THE SOLEDAD BROTHERS will surely send you to the heights.

Mixing punk, garage, soul, surf and 60’s rock one review makes comparisons

for THE HENTCHMEN with SONIC YOUTH and NEW YORK DOLLS and follows with the description “what would’ve happened if Buddy Holly had survived the plane

crash and hooked up with The Stooges. BUDDY HOLLY AND THE STOOGES.”

The three-piece unit consisting of Mike Latulippe (Drums), John Szymanski (Organ, Harmonica and Vocals) and Tim Purrier (Guitar) are on the road to promote the latest album entitled “Form Follows Function”. Mike and John also form half of THE PAYBACKS who are simply awesome.

The prospect of this long running backbone of the Detroit garage scene bringing their own particular brand of “hit and run” Rock n’roll blues to the U.K makes for a series of gigs that simply cannot be missed particularly in a venue of such intimate nature namely The George in Leeds.

Supporting the band at The George in Leeds will be Teesside’s very own

two-piece THE HIGH PLANE DRIFTERS continuing their musical onslaught of bastardised psychedelic garage blues. Having taken a little time out from gigging to work on recordings and new material the band look set for a busy month throughout March and April as they tour the U.K independently and as full tour support for Alabama’s THE IMMORTAL LEE COUNTY KILLERS which will include the band’s debut gigs in Scotland and Ireland.

Furthering this exceptional line up will be Benjamin Wetherill who is an incredibly talented singer and musician from Leeds who playing solo finds himself performing a very personal hybrid of Folk / Jazz / Blues. He has a voice and guitar style that never fails to captivate and mesmerize audiences wherever he plays. His own songs are beautifully haunting and melancholic and sit perfectly alongside his refined choice of cover versions that include classics such as “Barbara Allen” and “Gloomy Sunday” to name but a few. Wetherill is a unique performer whose quality of music is simply timeless. His recent 2004 performances and tours with The High Plane Drifters have earned him a great deal of praise and rave reviews that have been consistently summed up with the words …

“The best live performer I have seen this year.”

THE APE DRAPE ESCAPE

Over the last 18 months The Ape Drape Escape have been tearing up the venues

of Sheffield and building a reputation as one of the most exciting, powerful and unpredictable live acts the city has to offer. The Ape Drape Escape mash up influences including The Sex Pistols, Half Man Half Biscuit, The Fall and The Stooges. Its all energy and fun with a bit of rocky horror and cabaret thrown in for good measure. If you like bands like Les Georges Leningrad and Bette Davis you'll like these I reckon.

THIS AINT VEGAS
LORDS

COWTOWN
EAGLE EYE

This Aint Vegas > are contemporaries of the Futureheads playing jerky angular post punk, people compare them to everyone from Gang of Four and Fugazi to Q and not U, but they don’t really sound like any of them but are mint, and their new single ‘escape’ will be out on jealous records in time for this.

Lords > they are from Nottingham and amongst other things have two members of Wolves of Greece in the their ranks. Fabulous and heavy groove based rock, they will be releasing a debut album on Gringo Records some time soon.

Cowtown > are something of a super group of Leeds bands Brown Owl, Tigers and Monster Killed By Laser…their style is great playing quirky natty melodies with an edge, some have said they are in the same ballpark as Deerhoof.

Eagle Eye > are new and class, they are another super group containing a Buzzkill an 86 and a That Fucking Tank, they are one hell of a ball of noise, legend has it that they are like Arab on Radar or could be on a bill with Lightning Bolt. PART CHIMP

BILGE PUMP

MONSTER KILLED BY LAZER

Hailing from London, somewhere down south, Part Chimp have been described as the loudest band in Britain. Apparently ‘Loud and intense’ does not begin to describe quite how loud and intense they are. A devastating colision of dirge and melody combined with crushing heaviness, Part Chimp live are whale song for Merzbow fans and a means to discover which parts of one’s skull vibrate for everyone else. Their debut album Chart Pimp is soon to be followed by "I am come" on Rock Action.

Bilge Pump are so used to being treated like pricks

by fucking cunts, they don't give a fuck what anyone thinks about them. Hence no description.

Monster Killed By Lazer on the other hand haven't confirmed one way or the other so I refuse to write about them, making this write up even easier.
